The Nîkanêse Wah tzee Stewardship Society is seeking a Caribou Maternity Pen Lead to help organize and manage the successful operation of our 2026 maternity pen season. We are an Indigenous-led non-profit founded by Saulteau First Nations and West Moberly First Nations, focused on recovery of mountain caribou, healing the land and rekindling cultural connections. We have a small office in Mackenzie, BC.

Position Details

  • Term: January–August 2026 (part-time in January and August; full-time February–July)
  • Location: Mackenzie, BC preferred (Chetwynd or Moberly Lake possible)
  • Compensation: $68,000–$74,000 FTE, based on experience
  • Benefits: Extended health and paid time-off package, including Easter Monday and National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21)

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain the maternity pen to ensure safety and functionality before and during capture
  • Coordinate pen Guardians, contractors, and logistics during calving and care periods
  • Lead and support monitoring activities, site visits, and coordination with Guardian supervisors
  • Provide regular updates to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Support operational efficiency, safety, and team communication throughout the penning season

Qualifications

  • Experience managing complex field projects in remote or challenging conditions
  • Proficient with snowmobiles, ATVs, and 4×4 vehicles; owns a 4×4 truck and snow machine/ATV (charge-outs provided)
  • Valid driver’s license, PAL, and Level 1 First Aid
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Team-oriented with flexibility, humour, and cultural awareness

A degree in a relevant field such as wildlife, environmental, or resource management is an asset, along with experience in wildlife capture, animal handling, or husbandry. Knowledge or a willingness to learn about the cultural beliefs and Treaty rights of Treaty 8 members is highly valued, as are technical skills in GIS, telemetry, or population survey work.
