2024 Release & New Pen Construction
Successful Release from the Pen
On July 30, 2024, 21 female caribou and 18 calves were successfully released from the Klinse-Za Maternity Pen. Leading up to the release, Pen Guardians worked tirelessly to monitor every cow-calf pair daily, ensuring their health and safety.
- Caribou were guided out with strategically placed lichen and pellet troughs.
- The highest number of animals ever in the maternity pen made this year’s monitoring crucial.
- Trail cameras captured the release as the herd ventured toward Bickford Mountain.
Tracking the Herd & Investigating Mortalities
Collared caribou in the wild continue to provide valuable data on movement and survival. This fall, five adult caribou deaths were recorded—a higher number than usual—but two of the females were over 12 years old, showing longer lifespans.
First-ever investigation into collared male caribou deaths, will offer valuable insights into male life expectancy and causes of death.
New Linfitt Maternity Pen Construction
With maternity pens having a finite lifespan, the Bickford Pen was dismantled, and the new Linfitt Pen was constructed between Chetwynd and Mackenzie. This strategic location encourages the Klinse-Za herd to expand into new northern habitat.
- Bickford Pen dismantled and materials relocated.
- New 24/7 guardian cabin built to support long-term monitoring.
- Full restoration of the Bickford site planned for summer 2025.
A huge THANK YOU to the Pen Guardians and community members who worked for 2.5 months to complete this demanding project!
