Restoring Caribou Habitat: 2023 Progress & Monitoring

In 2023, we made significant strides in habitat restoration for the Klinse-Za caribou herd. Restoration treatments were conducted on six sites, focusing on deactivating former forestry roads near critical alpine habitat. Using mechanical site preparation, we treated 34 km of roads, making them less accessible to predators and human activity. Additionally, 9 km of previously treated roads were planted with tree seedlings to support long-term reforestation.

Monitoring Our Impact

To assess the effectiveness of these efforts, our camera trap monitoring program, now in its sixth year, captured nearly one million images in 2023. We use AI-based filtering software to streamline classification, ensuring we analyze the most relevant wildlife and human activity data. This monitoring is key to refining our approach and maximizing benefits for caribou recovery.
